Capraia

The island of Capraia is third biggest of the Tuscany Archipelago and is situated north-west of the island of Elba.

About 16 miles from Corsica and 36 miles from Livorno.

The island has a wild environment dominated by the Mediterranean scrubland and was formed by the eruption of a volcano about 9 million years ago.

The coastline to the west is steep and to the east more gentle and here you will find small natural lakes which are filled by the rainfall.

The island of Capraia is full of virgin cliffs and has only got one sandy bay called Mortola.

Known to the Greeks and Romans its name comes from the presence of wild goats which lived on the island in the past.

To the west you can find numerous caves where some rare examples of common seals still live.

The uncontaminated environment which is rich in flora and sea fauna is ideal for underwater fishing and for naturalistic excursions.

Today Capraia is part of the “Santuario del Cetacei” (Cetacean Sanctuary), fulcrum and pearl of the National Park of the Tuscany Archipelago, within the biggest protected marine area in Europe.
